Sociology Instructor

Begin: Fall 2017 Semester

 

Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District and is located in the San Fernando Valley.  With an enrollment of approximately 18,000 students, LAVC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs and transfers its students to the campuses of the CSU and UC systems as well as private institutions.

 

DEPARTMENT

The Sociology & Ethnic Studies Department of LAVC consists of 8 full-time faculty members and about 12 adjuncts.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAVC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer.  Faculty members at LAVC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals.  Seeking one or more instructors, full-time probationary (tenure track).  All instructors are required to teach fifteen hours per week.  Evening, online, and/or split assignments may be included in this assignment. This is a ten month appointment; however, additional summer and winter assignments may be available.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Sociology;
  • OR Bachelor’s in Sociology AND Master’s in anthropology, ethnic studies, social work, or psychology;
  • OR the equivalent.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years of Sociology teaching experience in a college setting.
  • Breadth in Sociology education and experience with specific emphasis on Social Welfare, Social Problems, Sociological Analysis and Racial and Ethnic Relations.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Enthusiasm for and knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies and the assessment of student learning (e.g., Student Learning Outcomes).
  • Interest in and willingness to participate in college and department committees.
  • Effective communication skills with students and colleagues in a multicultural environment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching the regular load of 15 hours of Sociology courses primarily in Social Welfare, Social Problems, Sociological Analysis and Racial and Ethnic Relations and holding regular office hours. Opportunities may exist for summer and winter intersession teaching.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the oversight of the Sociology program, Student Learning Outcome assessment, program review, course revision, develop and disseminate strategies, resources and materials for teaching sociology student in a multicultural and diverse environment.
  • Participation in department and campus committees and activities.
  • Perform other academic duties as assigned.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The current starting range is from $54,670 to $85,120 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $3,440 per academic year.  The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
