Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District and is located in the San Fernando Valley.  With an enrollment of approximately 18,000 students, LAVC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs and transfers its students to the campuses of the CSU and UC systems as well as private institutions.



The Credit E.S.L. Department is an independent department of LAVC, consisting of 3 full-time faculty members and about 12 adjuncts



Instructor, full-time probationary (tenure track).  All instructors are required to teach twelve hours per week with the assignment to begin Fall Semester, 2017. Evening, or split assignments, may be included in this assignment. This is a ten-month appointment; however, additional summer and winter assignments may be available.

 In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAVC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer.  Faculty members at LAVC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals.



  •  Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis; OR;
  • Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate; or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



  • Experience teaching college-level English as a Second Languages courses, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of second language learning methods and techniques, especially as they relate to adult learners.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language for Academic Purposes with an emphasis on Academic Writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach all areas of second language learning, which include but are not limited to reading, writing, listening/speaking, grammar, pronunciation and English for Specific Purposes.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language in multicultural classrooms to a diverse population of adult learners, including “Generation 1.5” learners.
  • Experience teaching courses involving the use of technology, especially in a second-language classroom setting.
  • Experience with the assessment of student learning (e.g., Student Learning Outcomes) as well as department-level planning and program review.
  •  Interest in and willingness to participate in college and department committees.



  • Teaching the regular load of 12 hours of credit English as a Second Language courses and holding regular office hours. Opportunities may exist for summer and winter intersession teaching.
  • Assist in curriculum and program development as well as updating course materials and course outlines of record.
  • Participate in the assessment of Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Participate in department and campus committees and activities.
  • Perform other academic duties as assigned.



The current starting range is from $54,670 to $85,120 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $3,440 per academic year.  The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.  See
